| Description | One of a series of portraits of the Protestant reformers, probably derived from the widely disseminated prints of learned men. The artist may have copied the woodcut of Zwingli in Theodore Beza's Icones, published in 1580, which contains portraits of the Reformers. This particular painting derives from the portrait of Zwingli by the German artist, Hans Asper. Ulrich Zwingli, the Swiss reformer, was born at Wildhaus in St Gall, studied at Bern, Vienna, and Basel, became a priest at Glarus and in 1518 was elected preacher in the Minster at Zurich. Zwingli's doctrines, set forth in his sixty-seven theses, brought him into sharp conflict with Luther and the resultant conflict was to rend the Protestant church. |
