| Description | This portrait of Charles I (1600-1649), painted on glass, is a copy of a painting by Van Dyck. The specific folds and creases on the blue Garter ribbon around the king's neck indicate that the picture copied was the portrait now at Chequers Court, which Van Dyck painted about 1636. The artist of the present portrait probably used a painted copy of the original portrait, or an engraved or mezzotinted version of it. The artist painted the portrait by starting with the highlighted areas and painting the background last, the reverse of the normal portraiture procedure. |
