| Description | This painting shows the young Christ embracing his cousin St John the Baptist. Previously thought to be a copy of a sixteenth century painting in the style of Michelangelo, the painting is actually a copy, in reverse, of a work by the seventeenth-century court painter Anthony Van Dyck. The composition may have been suggested to Van Dyck by a painting attributed to Parmigianino, then in the collection of Charles I. It was, however, a common Italian subject. Many copies were made of Van Dyck's work, indicating its popularity. This canvas is relatively new, suggesting a nineteenth-century date. |
