| Description | The composition of this painting was inspired by a colour sketch of the same subject by Peter Paul Rubens, now in the Rockoxhuis museum in Antwerp. Its stylistic qualities are consistent with the work of Cornelis Schut who was one of Rubens's more talented pupils. The influence of his master is clear in the florid composition and the expressiveness with which he conveys the drama of his subject. The unbalanced and confused nature of the scene, however, as well as the anatomical irregularities in some of the figures, are indicative of Schut's own technique. |
