| Description | This painting is part of a set of The Four Seasons, developed in the famous Venetian studio of the Bassani and often repeated. Jacopo Bassano, after studying in Venice, returned to his native town of Bassano and ran a very productive workshop with the increasing help of his sons Francesco the Younger (1549-92), Giovanni Battista (1553-1613), Leandro (1557-1622), and Gerolamo (1566-1621). The Four Seasons series which, with other series such as the Elements and the Story of Noah, originated with Jacopo and his son Francesco. Many versions of the series exist, produced in the Bassano workshop, where the production of copies/variations of popular works was common practice. The variations in quality are due to the different authors of the copies. Summer may be by Francesco Bassano, who was the best artist amongst the four sons. |
