Artist After Rubens, Peter Paul (Flemish painter and draftsman, 1577-1640)
Title Judgement of Solomon
Date earliest possibly about 1640
Date latestpossibly about 1700
Materialoil on canvas
Measurements115 x 146 cm (estimate)
Description The subject is Solomon resolving a dispute between two mothers over a child both believe to be their ownby offering to have it cut in half. Solomon seated on a throne at the left, scrutinises the group on the right. There, a semi naked man draws his sword, to bisect the child in half. The real mother kneeling, with back turned to viewer, looks at Solomon whilst pointing to the other woman on the far right. This composition is close to Rubens’ Judgement of Solomon, but stiffness, unrealistic anatomy, and wooden, unconvincing facial expressions, preclude this being an autograph painting.
