| Description | Jacob Backer was a pupil of Rembrandt in 1632, and his influence can be clearly seen in this work, although the collar is perhaps of more meticulous detail than may be found in comparative works by Rembrandt. Backer continued to paint portraits in Amsterdam until his death in 1651. |

On 17th November, 1928, the work was certified by W. Vogelsang of the Kunsthistorisch Institut der Rijks Universiteit, Utrecht, 'after exact research', to be by Backer. This attribution appears to have remained unchallenged to the present day, and currently there seems no reason to doubt it. |
