| Description | In the foreground of this landscape painting, there are three figures, a horse and three dogs. It is thought that the landscape itself was painted by Lucas Van Uden (1595-1672/73), while the figures are probably the work of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690). The immediate landscape is painted in darker shades of green, while the trees and fields in the distance are painted in more delicate colours and are more impressionistic. Van Uden favoured interpretations of the Brabant landscape (the area around Brussels), with bushy thickets of trees and occasional large oaks framing the design. |

| Notes | Van Uden's great talent was for observing nature. According to his biographer, van Uden took walks in the country in the early mornings, solely to sketch. His observation of nature was influenced by Paul Brill as well as by Peter Paul Rubens, whose works van Uden often imitated. Lucas van Uden also collaborated with artists such as Hendrik van Balen, Pieter van Avant and, as here, David Teniers the Younger. Few of the artist's works are signed and even fewer are dated, although most of his landscapes have been dated to between 1630 and 1650. |
