| Description | This floral still life is very similar to the paintings of Matthias Withoos. Although Netherlandish in origin, he travelled to Italy where his sotto-boccio still lifes became highly popular. This painting, with flowers arranged in an outdoor setting, adorned with various insects, snails and a lizard in the bottom right, follows his style and subject matter closely. Although the painting is inscribed with the initials 'M.W.' and was labelled in Italian on the reverse, it is dated ten years after his death. It is possible the work was painted by his daughter Maria, who was also an accomplished watercolourist. |
