Description Dou popularised 'niche' pictures, in which an interior (often a shop, as in this picture) is seen through an aperture. His meticulously detailed and highly finished style earned him a large following, especially in his native Leiden; his followers were known as 'fijnschilders', literally 'fine painters'. This picture is the work of a nineteenth-century imitator.
