Description Despite the signature 'A. Cuiip', it is unlikely that this painting is by the seventeenth-century master Aelbert Cuyp. Although its 'golden tones' and 'freedom of handling' appear to have convinced the donor of the painting and later critics, by 1930 the work had been recorded as a copy. Nonetheless, it does not attempt to duplicate a specific work but imitates the artist's general style. Seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painting witnessed a surge in popularity during the post-Napoleonic era, when this work was probably painted. Cuyp was perceived by some as the 'Dutch Claude Lorrain' and his paintings were highly sought-after.
