Description The signature and subject indicate an Italian artist. Although Gelommi does not appear in the literature on nineteenth-century Italian painting, the work does show some fine passages, particularly the peasant woman. The view of fishermen indicates a date around the third quarter of the century, when artists such as Nino Costa painted similar scenes. After the 1848 revolutions that swept Europe, many Italian painters became more political, engaging with the struggle for national independence. Instead of historical events, artists began to portray episodes from contemporary life in order to try to depict 'Italian' subject matter.
