| Description | The composition of this nineteenth-century painting is derived from a work by Gerrit Dou. Although the subject of a couple in a wine cellar is the same, the anecdotal perspective in the copy differs significantly from the original. In Dou's version the emphasis is on young love, with a maid filling a jug from a wine barrel as she talks to a young man holding a wine glass. The sense of innocence is lost in the later painting, however. Here the maid holds the glass as an older man puts his arm around her shoulder and entices her to drink. |
