Description Charles Stanley was the son of James, whose portrait also hangs in the University collection. Born in 1628, he succeeded his father as the Earl of Derby in 1651. Like his father he was a royalist, and was active during the Interregnum period. In 1660, he was appointed Lord-Lieutenant and Vice-Admiral of Lancaster and Cheshire. This is a fine copy of a portrait by Van Dyck now in a private collection. This version probably also comes from the collection of the Derby family, who live at nearby Knowsley Park. They were Chancellors of the University in the early twentieth century.

Attributed to Van Dyck school by Sotheby's 1978. Attributed to circle of Adriaen Hanneman in Sotheby's insurance report, 1987. Attributed to after van Dyck in Sotheby's insurance report 1997 with incorrect title James 7th Earl of Derby.

Copy of Van DyckCharles Stanley, Lord Strange, later 8th Earl of Derby, Trustees of the Rt Hon. Olive, Countess Fitzwilliam's Chattels Settlement and Lady Juliet Tadgell, 75 x 61, dated 1638, for details see Barnes.

The painting must have been given by the Derby family who have a seat at Knowsley, Prescot, Merseyside and were Chancellors of the University: 1903-1908 Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby; 1909-1948 Edward George Villiers Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby; 1948-1950 The Right Honourable Oliver Frederick George Stanley M.C., LL.D. (Edward George’s youngest son). Edward George Villiers Stanley in particular was very generous in his gifts to the University making him a likely donor. The sale paraphenalia on the back of the paintings does suggest however that, if this hypothesis is correct, they passed relatively recently into the Derby family's collections.
