| Description | This version after Rubens's late painting of the mythological subject of Andromeda (about 1638, Gemaldegalerie, Berlin) depicts the moment she is about to be rescued by Perseus. The use of quick, fluid brushstrokes and contrasting colours conveys the heightened drama of the scene. That the original painting was commissioned by King Philip IV of Spain in the last decade of Rubens's life, demonstrates the popularity of the Flemish artist throughout his career. Copies made after such paintings are testimony of his enduring fame. |
