| Description | Hagar, servant to Abraham and Sarah, conceived a child with her Master. When the aged Sarah gave birth to Isaac, Hagar and her son Ishmael were banished to the desert. This painting depicts the moment when, as Hagar despairs over the dying Ishmael, an angel appears and points to a spring of water. The angel said to her that he would make of Ishmael's children a great nation: 'Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.'(Genesis 18 -19). |

| Notes | Samuel Bentlif (1819 – 1897) was a boot and shoe manufacturer and wholesaler of Maidstone. In 1889 he offered to build an art gallery extension on to Chillington House in memory of his brother George Amatt Bentlif. The new wing opened in September 1890. The intention of the new art gallery was to display exhibitions and accommodate the George Bentlif collection of paintings. Upon Samuel’s death in 1897 the collection of foreign oil masters became the property of Maidstone Museum. |
