Description The sitter is Alexander Henderson (1583-1646), the Scottish Presbyterian cleric who played a key role in the fight to preserve Presbyterianism as the national religion of Scotland. He is depicted at three-quarter length against a dark brown background, with his right elbow resting on the base of the column.The restrained colour scheme and the sitter’s intense gaze convey an impression of austerity.
