| Description | The unknown sitter in this bust-length portrait wears a pearl necklace and a low-cut dark blue velvet dress over a white chemise. Her dress has broad sleeves with muslin under-sleeves billowing out, a style which was fashionable in the 1660s. Costume and hairstyle thus indicate a possible date for the portrait. The work is painted in the style of Herman Verelst. After training and working in Antwerp, Verelst moved to England in about 1669. |
