Artist Attributed to Italian (Emilian) School
Title Virgin and Child
Date earliest possibly 1490
Date latestpossibly 1520
Materialtempera on panel
Measurements38.2 x 29.5 cm
Description The paint layers on this panel painting are extremely thin caused by invasive cleaning in the past. Through the paint layers a very simple underdrawing can be seen, which could indicate the application of a standard model or cartoon. Based on the use of a tempera paint medium as well as the technique, its origin may be found in late 15th century northern Italy. The possible use of a cartoon or other means of copying specific types, seems to indicate a prototype used for a high production of a popular theme.
