Description

The female figure represented half-covered by a pink drape reclining in a scallop shell in the sea is probably Venus, the goddess of love and mother of Cupid. The episode of her birth from the foam of the sea, from whence she was carried to land in a shell, appears in Hesiod's Theogony.

This mythological subject may have been painted in the manner of the Bolognese artist Francesco Albani.
