| Description | A large, modestly executed, bawdy tavern scene of peasants carousing. In the foreground, two matrons drunkenly paw at a red-faced, middle-aged man who staggers between them. In the centre-ground a group of people drink around a table, watched attentively by a dog; a woman stands beyond with her arms outstretched, perhaps singing. In the background another amorous tussle takes place. The shabby interior, with its inclined wooden ceiling, is illuminated by daylight from a large window. The many every-day objects include utensils on shelves, baskets, and a large upturned pitcher in the right foreground. |
